30 Year US Army Veteran and Former Exec Director of Louisiana Dept. of Veteran Affairs to Address Baton Rouge Community College – Guidance Aviation Flight Students
Col. Joey Strickland, a 30 year Veteran of the US Army, is set to address the Baton Rouge Community College helicopter flight students during the BRCC – Guidance Aviation Student BBQ on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the helicopter flight operations hangar, Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport (BTR), 9210 CE Woolman Drive, Baton Rouge, LA., 70807. Strickland will be speaking with the students enrolled in Louisiana’s collegiate helicopter degree program which is a part of the College’s Center of Excellence in Transportation.
Free helicopter rides are to be raffled off and food for the event will be catered for the students, their families, and V.I.Ps, free of charge.
About Col. Joey Strickland, US Army (Ret.)
Col. Joey Strickland (Ret.), US Army, served nearly 30 years in the U.S. Army, as an Armor Officer, including two combat tours in Vietnam. Strickland a retired Colonel, participated in seven Battle campaigns in Vietnam, and also served on active duty during Desert Storm.
Col. Strickland was appointed to head the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services in July 2008 after serving more than 13 years as the Deputy Secretary and Executive Director of the Louisiana Department of Veteran’s Affairs, responsible for overseeing five veterans’ nursing homes, one state veterans’ cemetery, and the Department’s administrative and claims divisions.
Mr Strickland was also State Director of the Louisiana Office of Indian Affairs for more than ten years.In 2008, he was appointed Director of Veterans Services for the State of Arizona by Governor Janet Napolitano. Mr. Strickland recently retired from State Service after serving Veterans for nearly 18 years in two states.
At the National level he served as National President of all State Directors of Veterans Affairs for the United States (NASDVA) and Chaired the National Committee on Minority Veterans for the Federal VA in Washington. Mr Strickland currently serves on the National Committee for Homeless Veterans and has testified on several occasions before Congress on Veterans issues. In 2012 he was named by the Obama White House as a Champion of Change, one of 11 Vietnam most influential veterans in the United States. He has been inducted into the Louisiana Military Hall of Honor as a distinguished Veteran and in 2013 was inducted into the National Troops To Teachers Hall of Fame in Denver Colorado.
