Post 9/11 GI Bill® Grandfather Clause Update

Yesterday, the House passed a version of the Post-9/11 GI Bill® grandfather clause which would preserve current tuition and fee rates for those affected by the pending $17,500 cap. Rick Maze at the Air Force Times has mAffairs ore at the link below. He writes,

“As a result of a new $17,500 annual limit on tuition and fee payments for private school students that takes effect Aug. 1, students at some colleges and universities in Arizona, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Texas could see a drop in GI Bill® benefits because their payments would be higher than the cap.”

The recently passed legislation will grandfather tuition and fee payments for students enrolled in private Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) in the seven states referenced above. These grandfathered rates would be in effect from August 1, 2011 through July 31, 2014.

Representative Jeff Miller, the bill’s primary sponsor, originally intended to pay for it by freezing cost-of-living increases to the monthly housing allowance. This has been replaced by a by a limitation in a planned fee reduction for some VA home loans.

Check out Rick Maze’s article for more info and you can also read the legislation at the other link below. Remember, this still has to pass in the Senate and be signed by the President before it becomes law. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as always.
